My Dad 80'S Fishing

My dad posing with his 5kg golden snapper probably caught off Marina or Tuas area, both places, then, were newly reclaimed land. Most of the fishes he brought home were mostly around the 2-3kg range and at 05 or 06 fishes mostly snappers, groupers, gerut2, ikan kapas, siakap, sagai. He never bothered to take pictures because it was his normal routine, going fishing.

Me posing with my dad's golden snapper. I wish i will get this fish someday. What i mean is- Golden Snapper or Ang Chor with no Ki or dot near the tail...

The golden snapper was still in its golden colour. The length of the fish covered the whole length of the local malay Berita Harian newspaper.

From what my dad related on the same month, while he's on sampan fishing off Pulau Salu, he had hooked a monster fish and fought it for 45mins. He was using a Shogun 5'6ft rod with his Daiwa Black Diamond 7000 size reel loaded with only a 20lb Berkley Tournament mono- the mono line has a very thin diameter line than the Berkley Big game. His friends keep reminding him on his line being too thin, did not dared helping him as he was fighting the monster fish alone. Ater the fierced fight the fish surrendered and rised to the side of the sampan and it was was a 9'FT Long Ikan Kemejan or a Shovelnose Ray and thus the length of the beast covered the entire length of the sampan. There were two big Cobias as guardians accompanying it. The fish was monstrous! But then, my dad unhooked thus releasing the beast unharmed, while Mr Wahab caught one of the cobia. I have been on the sampan for deep sea fishing since i was 8years old and learned the tricks of the trade from my dad and his fishing buddies. To this day, i swore i will break my dad's record  .... one fine day....
My Dad's Siakap or Kim Bak Lor. I had to force him to take a picture. I think this fish was caught during one of his shore fishing trips in Tuas reclaimed land. It weighed in at about 9kg. During that time, I was already hooked onto fishing and was eager to learn skills and aspects of fishing from him. He started to include me in his boat-trips [9 feet sampan], which departs from West Coast at least deep sea fishing twice weekly.
Note that the siakap was almost the same height as my sister. During this time, i was also introduced to shore fishing. The year was 1983 and i have been to some of the fishing havens in Singapore. Marina Ctr, East, South, Tuas Reclaimed land and most famously was Tanjung Penjuru. I was strictly taught on sprinkling the bread and belachan thus enticing by pulling out the big and long Wat-wat worms by only using my fingers. At that time, the hotest spot for snappers or unga emas and tandas at the end of Marina South facing Keppel Container Port. My dad was always fishing with his best fishing buddy, Mr Ali, a former professional bodybuilder or with his younger brother mr Osman..
